Halloween: Felt Spooky Door Panels

This Halloween, greet those that enter your room or office with this easy, no-sew Felt Spooky Door Panels project!

Supplies and tools can be purchased at your local Hancock Fabrics store.

Supplies & Tools:

• 1 Yard 36”x72” Black CPE Soft Felt
• 1 – 12”x18” Gray EZ Stiff Felt Sheet
• 1 – 9”x12” Yellow Stick-It Felt Sheet
• 2 – 9”x12” White Stick-It Felt Sheets
• Tape
• Craft knife
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Felt Glue or Hot Glue
• 36” Spring-Tension Curtain Rod
• Templates (Download here - 5-page PDF)

Instructions:

1. Cut black felt yard in half making two 18”x72” panels.
2. Using templates, cut moon from yellow felt, ghosts from white felt and bats from gray felt.
3. Take one black panel and cut a slit 1/2” from the top of the 18” side every 3”. Make slit wide enough to insert your curtain rod. Repeat on other panel.
4. Insert panels onto rod and hang in doorway.
5. Starting in the bottom left corner, cut your panel at an angle toward the center using wavy lines as seen in illustration below. Repeat process with right panel.
6. Using picture as a guide, adhere shapes to the panels.

Felt Owl Tote Bag

Supplies & Tools:

• 3 – 9”x12” CPE Brown Felt Sheets
• 2 – 9”x12” CPE Cocoa Felt Sheets
• 2 – 9”x12” CPE Camel Felt Sheets
• 1 – 9”x12” CPE Cranapple Felt Sheet
• 1 – 9”x12” CPE Tangerine Felt Sheet
• 1 – 9”x12” CPE Ivory Felt Sheet
• 2 – 7/8” Buttons
• 4 – 5/8” Buttons
• Yellow Embroidery Thread
• White Embroidery Thread
• Orange Embroidery Thread
• Template (Download from here)
• Scissors
• Sewing Machine
• Sewing Needle and Straight Pins

Instructions:

1. Using the template, cut the owl parts from the 9”x12” sheets of felt.  Use the picture as a color guide.
2. Cut three 3”x12” rectangles from camel felt, two 3”x12” rectangles each from cranapple felt and cocoa felt.
3. Fold a rectangle in half lengthwise and pin it along the open edges.  Make  ¼” cuts all down the length of the rectangle.  Repeat this step for the remaining six rectangles.
4. Using the sewing machine, sew the open side of the rectangle strips to a 9”x12” sheet of brown felt.  Use the picture as a color guide.  Sew the first strip to the bottom of the brown felt sheet just above the edge of the width of the sheet.  Continue sewing the rest of the strips, spacing them evenly so that the looped edge overlaps the straight edge of the strip underneath.
5. Place a 9”x12” brown felt sheet on top of the feathered sheet and sew the side edges together.  Trim off any excess feathers that may be longer than the width of the sheet.  Turn the body right side out.
6. Sew the large 5 ½” circle onto the bottom part of the felt sheets to create the base of the bag.
7. Using a running stitch with embroidery thread, sew the two small circle eye pieces onto the heart shaped part of the face.  Sew the large 7/8” buttons on top of both of the small circles.  Sew the nose onto the face.  Use the picture as a guide.
8. Continue using a running stitch with embroidery thread to sew the small ear triangles onto the outside part of the face.  Position the heart shaped part of the face onto the outside part of the face and sew them onto the bag just above the feather line.
9. Using the picture as a guide, make a running stitch all around the larger part of the wings.  Sew the smaller part of the wing onto the larger part in the same manner.
10. Position the wings onto the owl front and place the smaller 5/8” buttons onto the top part of the wing.  Sew the buttons onto the bag.
11. Using orange embroidery thread, sew a running stitch around the edge of the feet.  Sew them onto the bottom of the bag.
12. Cut a 3”x12” rectangle from the brown felt for a handle.  Fold in half lengthwise and use embroidery thread to stitch a running stitch around all four edges of the rectangle. 
13. Use the remaining small 5/8” buttons to sew the ends of the handle onto the sides of the bag.

Love Banner - No Sew Project

May your home be full of love. Set the tone in your living room with this felt "Love" banner project. Get ready for Valentine's Day!

Instructions:

1. Use banner template to trace and cut 6 banners out of white felt.

2. Use a hole puncher to make a hole in each top corner of the banner.
3. Attach grommets to the corner holes.

4. Cut out heart template and trace and cut out 2 pink hearts.

5. Cut out lips template and trace and cut out 2 red lips.

6. Use the letter template to trace and cut out red letters.

7. Cut out lace and ribbon to fit onto the tops of banners.

8. Glue the ribbons and cut outs onto each banner.

9. Thread yarn through each banner piece for hanging.

Winter Suncatchers – Holiday Fun for the Whole Family

My favorite days in the winter are those when the sky is a clear, bright blue and the sun is shining. On those days the temperature isn’t much of a concern because it’s just so pretty out. But let’s face it. Sometimes, no matter how pretty the sky is, it’s just too cold to spend time outside. So bring the best of the outdoors, in!

Suncatchers can really make the indoors sparkle with that natural sunlight.  Plus, they are so versatile. My son and I paint them together and then attach them to holiday gifts. My son loves giving out these presents, bragging that he painted the attached suncatcher just for that person.  Some of our friends hang the suncatchers on their Christmas trees and then after the holidays put them up in bright windows so they can enjoy them all year long.

We don’t even carve out a ton of extra time to paint our suncatchers. It becomes part of our holiday preparations. We do have one special tradition though: when we know we are going to get snow, we pull out some special designs and paint them the night before so that they are ready to glitter against all of the pretty fresh snow.

Crafty Stocking Stuffers

Thanks to our friends over at CraftGossip.com we discovered our favorite new website: Bugs and Fishes! The site is the brainchild of Laura “Lupin” Howard who confesses that she is obsessed with felt. We didn’t need to know much more to love her. But then we took a peak at some of her projects and all we could say was, WOW!

Laura has a creative vision and ideas that got the wheels turning for us. In fact, she published a wonderful article full of adorable projects that would be perfect as stocking stuffers. Check it out!

And the Stockings were Hung by the Chimney with Care…

I don’t know about you, but it seems like every other year or so we  are adding stockings. Whether we’re replacing worn out ones or adding new members to the family doesn’t seem to matter. We just need more. Plus, my son loves to give his teachers gifts in a stocking as an extra touch so we’ve had to figure out quick and creative stocking making. Fortunately, we have some really talented designers on our team to help us with that!


Over the next three weeks we are going to share fun and different stocking ideas with you. Make them to decorate your hearth, or give them as gifts. Either way the process is fun and much like snowflakes, you can make each one unique.

This week we’re starting out simple with a basic mini stocking. This little guy is easy to make and perfect for gift cards, candy, dog or cat treats and other small gifts. Mix it up a bit by making it with different colors of felt, or add Stick-It Felt numbers letters or shapes for an extra touch.

Thanksgiving Reflections

Our Thanksgiving holiday was a wonderful time for us to spend with our families and think about all of the wonderful people and opportunities in our lives. It also reminded us what a pleasure it is for us to craft and to share our crafts with others.

Crafting is so much more than just creating decorations or gifts. It’s a time to be creative and bond with friends and family. And in one special case, it was a time to learn a new culture and share some of our own.

A few summers ago we sent Kelly’s suncatchers with the Monaghan Baptist Church on their mission trip to Jamaica. We paint suncatchers all the time. We get excited by the new designs and love to get creative with them. But even we weren’t prepared for the reaction we got. 

The people our friends at Monaghan Baptist visited had never seen anything like our suncatchers before. They took excitement to a new level. And we got to see a craft we do every day through fresh eyes.

The Monaghan Baptist was a success on many levels. We are so glad we got to be a part of it.

Frame It Up for Thanksgiving

We’ve been trying to pull together some fun and quick ideas for your Thanksgiving dinner. This project is an old favorite – easy enough to do for everyone at your table and pretty enough to keep in your house all year long. 

You can get this project done in no time – you just need a frame, some jute or twine and our fall leaves assortment. If you want to change the look a little bit, you can use felt instead of jute for the background. If you stick with the jute, simply wrap it around the frame. Place and then glue your leaves and you’re done!

If you want to use this as a name plate on your table, simply print or write your guests’ names on cardstock and put it in place. Or, take your favorite Thanksgiving photo and proudly display it.
